Louisville Kentucky Events – Light Up Louisville

Louisville Kentucky Events - Light up LouisvilleThe Louisville Kentucky event Light Up Louisville was held last night.  This marks the twenty-sixth annual festivity that is held the day after Thanksgiving to mark the beginning of the holiday season.

This year was quite cold with temperatures in the approximately low 30s,  and instead of the traditional Norwegian Spruce tree as the centerpiece, this year it was an artificial tree lit up with energy efficient and long lasting Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights.

While most persons would have probably preferred a traditional “live” tree, most agreed that the artificial tree was attractive and did carry the holiday spirit.

A total of approximately 36 other real & artificial trees were also decorated in the downtown Louisville Kentucky area – with almost 2 million lights used in total to light up the event.

The switch to the artificial tree was made as a result of problems with last year’s live tree.  The tree last year was lowered by a helicopter and almost immediately capsized and fell over before being set into place – and causing some damage to a nearby city owned light pole as well.

Also as part of the festivities marking the Light Up Louisville event, there was a parade with the Best Float award sponsored by Wendys, going to Geek Squad.  Their float was comprised of 9 Volkswagen Beetles decorated to give the appearance of Santa Claus’ 9 reindeer – they had antlers, among other cute innovations that helped them take first place in the awards.

Sojourn Community Church provided holiday singing for the festivities and sang many classics including ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’.

This is just one of many events held in the downtown Louisville Kentucky area that encourage persons from all across Kentuckiana to come and celebrate good tidings with one another.  Other great events include: Dickens on Main Street, the Greek Festival, the German Festival, Thunder over Louisville, etc, etc.  The list just goes on and on.  Civic pride, and a strong community spirit make all of the festivities a huge success and many persons find that once you attend, it gets in your blood and you look forward toward next year’s event.

Happy Holidays everyone! :)
