The Shelby County Kentucky Board of Education has given approval and allocated money for 3 new schools to be built over the next 8 years. One school will be an elementary, one school will be a middle school, and one school will be a high school. All 3 schools will be constructed at a new school campus located off US 60 (aka Shelbyville Road aka Frankfort Road aka Louisville Road, etc) near Ardmore Lane.
The total projected costs is estimated to be $100 million for the 3 schools.
The first school to be constructed will be a place for 8th and 9th grade students and will be known as the 8/9 center. This will help ease some of the congestion currently being experienced by the overcrowded middle and high schools in Shelbyville KY. This building is expected to be completed by the Fall in 2010, and will contain approximately 200,000 sq.ft. (which is roughly equivalent in size to a Wal-Mart Supercenter for comparison’s sake). This new building will eventually become a new second Shelby County Kentucky High School.
The next school to be constructed is proposed to be the new elementary school and will open by the Fall in 2012.
They had planned originally to construct the new schools in phases - but have modified the original concept to get the buildings opened up in a serial fashion (1 building built, 1 building opened), rather than the build multiple schools all at the same time (opening all buildings simultaneously).
Part of the pressing need for the schools to get opened up quickly is the tremendous amount of growth that Shelbyville KY and Shelby County Kentucky are experiencing. There are many new and recent real estate developments, and these new homes have brought with them a big influx of children needing to attend school.
Once the growing pains of the growth that Shelby County is experiencing is past, it is likely that we will start seeing more convenience popping up to serve the local community including restaurants, etc.
