Shelbyville KY IllegalsThe Shelbyville KY newspaper The Sentinel-News reports in their Friday October 26 2007 edition, that the Shelbyville City Council is considering adopting an ordinance that would crack down on employers that hire illegal aliens by inspecting the I-9 forms.

Under present laws, an employer isn’t required to file an I-9 form with the government until 3 years after hiring a new worker, or 1 year after the employee is terminated, whichever is greater.

The proposed ordinance imposed by the Shelbyville KY city council would require employers to file an I-9 verification with city hall if they are audited. This would essentially force employers to verify that their employees were legal.

Employers that disregard procedure and laws, could be fined anywhere between $250 and $5500 per employee that was found to be in non compliance. The employers can also not be allowed to have any federal government contracts for a year as well as possibly prosecution under the immigration laws.

And taking it a step further, if employers do not keep the proper documentation, they can be fined up to $1000 per person - regardless if the person working is legal or not.

According to Immigration Customs Enforcement agents, 126 illegal aliens have been deported from Shelby County Kentucky this year. 31 additional persons are currently being detained pending determination of their status.
